The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights

Uncategorized — admin @ 2:11 pm

A film by Emmett Malloy

In the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album Icky Thump, the White Stripes headed North of their hometown Detroit, across the Canadian border on an ambitious journey.   The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C to Newfoundland to Nunavut.  “Having never done a tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog.” Taking their tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape.  “From the ocean to the permafrost.” says Jack White.  “We wanted to play out of the way towns, that don’t usually get shows…the shows are better, it’s better for the people, it’s a better experience, it’s way more unique, something interesting is going to happen…hopefully.”

White called upon filmmaker Emmett Malloy to come up and document this trek for the band.  Malloy had directed videos for the band in the past, and seemed eager to hit the road with the band for this important moment in rock and roll history.  Equipped with a couple 16mm cameras, along with a few other documenting devices, the band and crew all headed North and the end result is The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights.

SLIDING LIBERIA: Moive of the Year

Sliding Liberia — admin @ 11:18 pm

Like so many surf films this one is about travel, unlike the others, it is also a social documentary. Sliding Liberia follows three young surfers who go to the civil-war-torn West African country in search of more than perfect waves. Along the way they record the stories of people like Alfred, a young boy who became Liberia’s first surfer after finding a bodyboard while fleeing from rebels. Besides rediscovering a world-class point break, the surfers find something much more important—a way to travel responsibly in the 21st century. Featured surfers: Chris Del Moro, Dan Malloy, and O‘ahu-born Crystal Thornburg. Film veteran and Hawai‘i resident Dave Homcy (Surfwise, Lost) did the cinematography.
